P&R Morson's Ian Rushton Conquers The City That Never Sleeps
Friday 3rd November 2017, 6am. P&R Morson’s very own Marathon Man Ian Rushton departs from Gatwick airport, destination New York City to take on one of the world’s most famous road races and tick off another item from his marathon bucket list.
After completing the London Marathon in 2014 in a time of 3 hours and 40 minutes, Ian set his sights on competing in the world’s top six marathons, London, New York, Tokyo, Boston, Chicago and Berlin. Arriving in New York with running partner Dave Poole and setting up camp at the New Yorker hotel just two blocks from the Empire State building, his focus quickly turned to the physical and mental challenge ahead.
Race day started at 4am with a typical American breakfast of pancakes topped with bacon then smothered in maple syrup with coffee and orange juice to wash it all down – a true athlete’s breakfast! 5am, 42nd Street and Ian met up with the rest of his group and another ten thousand runners all ready to be bussed to Staten Island for the start of this epic race. Approximately fifty one thousand runners took part this year.
We are very pleased to say that Ian, having endured several injuries beforehand and having to race in mixed weather conditions crossed the finish line in Central Park in a time of 3hrs and 45mins, not his personal best but a time he can be very proud of. Upon completing the race Ian said he felt like dying. Then, after a while and being able to reflect, that feeling changed to a huge sense of achievement celebrated that evening with two tickets to watch the New York Knicks at Madison Square Gardens.
Well done Ian from all of us at P&R Morson – next stop Tokyo 2018?
